Worship always begins with God; it is the revelation of who He is that will stir us to pour out our hearts to Him. The more we know Him and the greater He becomes to us, the more we will want to pour out not only our hearts but our entire lives to Him. The most common Greek word translated as "worship" in the New Testament (55 times!) is "proskuneo" which means to come forward and kiss. Often it was used to mean to bow down in reverence and kiss the feet of the King who had conquered in battle. In worship, we come close to our Lord and kiss the feet of the One who "conquered" our hearts. Worship is to be intimate...a heart-to-heart connection between the Lord and His people.

In worship, we give God the worth He is due ("worth-ship"!!). Worship is the act of coming before the awesome Creator of the Universe and saying "You are God, I am not, and I surrender again to You because You are good and Your love endures forever."  And we do this no matter what our circumstances are. As Matt Redman says in The Unquenchable Worshipper, "The heart of God loves a persevering worshipper who, though overwhelmed by many troubles, is overwhelmed even more by the beauty of God."

May we all be so overwhelmed by the beauty and holiness of our Lord that "the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace." (Helen H. Lemmel)
